Zookal: The Free Mobile Reviewer-on-the-Go

Good news! Filipino students can now review for their entrance exams and other achievement tests for free while on their mobile phones.

A new educational app is now available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store to help students and young professionals review for the tests they are going to take for free. Zookal utilizes mobile technology to help make learning more affordable and accessible to Filipinos, particularly for those without access to resources like review centers, as well as expensive reviewer materials. Whether you are taking an entrance exam, a civil service exam or a board exam, Zookal can help you achieve better success rate by availing their free practice reviewers.

The app intends to equalize opportunities for Filipino students to pass entrance examinations to universities, and other achievement tests with review materials that can be easily accessed via their mobile phones.

Zookal, which was launched to the Philippine market recently already registered over 50,000 downloads in its first month. It is among the most downloaded apps in the Google Play store for devices running on the Android operating system.

"We’re very happy with the results after less than a month since we launched. We realized how valuable education is to Filipinos and how they strive hard to be better at what they do. Our app usage is just magnanimous. We will be adding more questions and more features soon in order to cater to the growing demand of the free practice exam service our app offers," said Jon Tse, Co-Founder, Zookal.

It contains a database of over 30,000 practice multiple-choice questions designed for various entrance tests for schools, colleges, and universities like the UPCAT; the National Achievement Test, as well as licensure examinations for professionals, and Civil Service for those wanting to work in the Philippine government. It is also looking at expanding the content to cover other tests including the NCLEX, IELTS, GMAT, to name a few.

The app simulates the nature of multiple-choice entrance tests, allowing users to swipe through questions and complete quizzes. Upon completing the quizzes, users then earn bonus study tips compiled by students from the University of the Philippines as well as teachers from Teach for the Philippines; these tips are aimed at instilling effective and healthy study habits to Filipino students so they can improve their study outcomes and enhance their learning experience.

Smart backs 31st Kadayawan, Davao’s grand festival of bounty and harvest

Mobile leader Smart Communications (Smart) led private sector support for the 31st Kadayawan Festival, which came at the heels of the PLDT wireless unit’s announcement of its plans to accelerate its LTE deployment and other network improvement initiatives in Davao City.

Visitors who flocked to Davao were among the first to enjoy the treats prepared by Smart to celebrate the festival, as Smart booths at the Francisco Bangoy International Airport gave out Philippine eagle plush toys and Kadayawan map-postcards to tourists who purchased Smart pocket wifi devices and prepaid credit packages.

Seeing the city’s need to accommodate higher tourist arrivals, Smart ensured its mobile data network was fortified in the home of the country's president, as it offered prepaid and postpaid subscribers a generous data package so that they could share their Kadayawan experiences online.

GigaSurf50, the country’s first 1GB data offer at only P50, gave local and foreign tourists access to high speed mobile internet for three days, allowing them to browse more websites, share more photos, and stream more videos in their smartphones.

During the opening ceremonies of Kadayawan, Art Boncato, co-chair of the executive committee of this year's celebrations, lauded the support of the private sector.

He said that the support of Smart contributes to the great success of Kadayawan.

“The contributed efforts of the private sector are really indications of an engaged society,” he said. “The returns of the investment that they put in can’t be measured against the wonderful outcome and the results of people coming together as one.”

Boncato said that unity among different industries shows that there is “love” to make the places where they operate a valuable tourism destination.

The tourism officer also lauded the effort of Smart to make internet accessible to more people and tourists. “Connectivity is crucial to the pursuit of success,” he said. “People coming together in events like Kadayawan is always a moment worthy of capturing and sharing. This showcase of Davao to the world makes the destination even more attractive to travellers.”

The events of the Kadayawan—from street parties to bazaars and concerts—drew strong crowds in different parts of the city, adding festive vibes from morning until midnight.

Smart also supported the Great Kadayawan Trade Fair and Bazaar at the Davao Convention and Trade Center. The bazaar returns this year with its biggest installation yet; it featured over 200 booths that carried a wide range of products and services.

During the bazaar, Smart mounted the Smart Zone where subscribers were offered free charging in stations, alongside games and interactive booths like the karaoke challenges by Smart Music Live.

Creativity of subscribers were highlighted in Smart's Own It Launchpad Upload station. The station allowed them to record and upload for chances to collaborate with international YouTube starts and Samsung gadgets.

“The Great Kadayawan Trade Fair and Bazaar highlights exciting products, services, and food offerings in every visitor’s experience,” Boncato said. “The collective Kadayawan vibe in the bazaar is imprinted in every booth and makes trips to the event memorable, transforming retail experiences.”

Visitors of the bazaar who posted in social media using #SmartKadayawan and #SmartDavCon were given special prizes and tickets to Spectrum Philippines' Invasion concert series in Davao.

The Smart Dome in the Kadayawan Invasion concert in the Crocodile Park grounds upped the fun with face painting, do-it-yourself bracelet activities and virtual reality booths.

Partygoers were also able to live come up with jams in a DJ booth, making the Invasion party a night to remember, and the Kadayawan weekend worth remembering.

Sun Made Brown Rice and WapatDC to Boost Mindanao Tourism and Promote Fitness

Sun Made Brown Rice has recently inked a partnership with WapatDC, a cycling group based in Mindanao to promote health, fitness and tourism in the land of promise. Sun Made is one of the leading brand of brown rice in the Philippines.

Carlo Lorenzana who is the Vice President of Sun Made started the idea and reached out to WapatDC to strengthen their advocacy in health and fitness. With the same intent of helping the Mindanaoans live a healthier lifestyle, the partnership was formed.  Both entities realized that they could align fitness, health, and tourism to form an advocacy.

Victor Magno, one of the founders of WapatDC shared that the main advocacy of the organization is to promote cycling tourism in Mindanao. He added, "We want  to show people how beautiful Mindanao is, especially from a point of view on a two-wheel vehicle. Driving around in car, looking at sights is fun up to a certain point. After which, it can start to get boring and normally people start to tune out of the scenery, which is pity because the Mindanao countryside is gorgeous. When you do it on two wheel, you have such a different experience."

As part of the partnership, Sun Made supports WapatDC through a financial aid and co branding strategy. It will also help promote the organization's advocacy as well as provide the members of WapatDC a supply of healthy brown rice.
